Stone Sculptures Playing with Perception

Japanese artist Hirotoshi Ito designs sculptures that play with the perception of the viewer by carving unpolished rock. Ito creates interesting products with the illusion of motion and flexibility by carving the natural textured stones away from each other.

Collecting his stones from a stream close to his home in Japan and carving with surgical precision, the artist is inspired by pioneers of surrealism such as René Magritte and Salvador Dalí. He is bringing to the stone an exciting and humorous form.

‘’Although I work with various kinds of stones, most of my work consists of optimizing a stone’s original shape.’’ Ito says. ‘’A smile on the beholder’s face is the main motivation for my work.’’
