Sculptural Marble House
Sculptural Marble House
Marble House, which is designed by the studio Openbox in Bangkok, Thailand, has a fascinating facade made of wedge-shaped marble pieces from the large natural stone masses.
To create a holistic sense of volume, Openbox architects preferred white marble panels to cover the brick walls on the upper floor of the building. This additional layer, also prevents the building from overheating during Bangkok's hot summer months.
A series of openings are designed to add movement to the front facade and receive sunlight into the house. These openings are angled in a fin-like form and the windows are intended to face the back garden.
The main volume of the house, covered with marble, extends across the building in two blocks, one forming a balcony with a pitched roof and the other placed on two folding walls.
With its facade and exterior form, the house looks like a large piece of marble sculpture when viewed from a distance. The first aim of the designers is to give the residents the feeling that they live in a home built by carving a large natural stone.
Bedrooms in the upstairs look at the inner courtyards where marble of the facade continues.
There is a courtyard in the center of the building to allow plenty of daylight to enter inside. One can acess the courtyard with plants and trees from the hall where you can see different shades of the same marble.
In the interior of the house, we can see the effects on the facade on the upper walls covered with marble panels, while the lower walls are covered with dark natural stone to create contrast.
