Polystyrene, Rubber, and Plastic Look Marbles from Fabio Viale

Italian Sculptor Fabio Viale, born in Cuneo in 1975, gives marble an incredible feeling of lightness. Sculptures that play incredible tricks on consciousness and surprise those who see them every time, come out with Carrara marble, one of the noblest artistic materials.

Viale explains how to turn marble into polystyrene with an example:

‘’Take for example the ‘’Nike’’ sculpture: this marble stone is called Acquazzurra, coming from quarries that never see sunlight, because they are exposed to the north. It is an extremely glassy and crystalline marble and it’s fantastic for creating the polystyrene effect. Every single ball is hand-carved with, a small drill also used by dentists. The processing is long and arduous because it must be capable of transforming a hard and resistant material such as marble into a material with a polystyrene effect, very light and very poor.’’

Seeing himself as a sculptor rather than an artist, Viale says he is passionate about materials and shapes. In his works, he interprets the past in a contemporary language.

Viale misleads the perception of those who experience the sculptures with her works. So marble behaves like rubber and polystyrene and puts into question the eternal opposition between matter and form.

Viale says that it takes patience and different techniques to obtain rubber surfaces from marble.

He states that the reason why he prepared a sculpture collection containing wheels and tires is that he thinks the interlocking wheels and tires represent popular movements.
