Modernism and Natural Elegance: Redesigning Cal Totxo House

Located at the foothills of Barcelona's Collserola Nature Park, Cal Totxo is a house originally prized for its magnificent views and optimal sunlight exposure. However, the interior of the original apartment, characterized by isolated and mundane corridors, prompted a redesign led by Cierto Estudio.
The project design revolves around reorganizing the spatial layout of the house while revitalizing its original character with selected natural finishing materials. The primary focus of the redesign involves removing narrow, lightless corridors and ensuring each room has at least two access points, maximizing common areas.

This allows for the illumination of previously dark rooms and enhances the perceived spaciousness of the interiors. In line with the client's preferences, only two out of the three bedrooms are retained, expanding the common areas. Additionally, one bathroom is redesigned while the other is transformed into a laundry room, and the kitchen is converted into an open-plan layout merging with the living room to create a bright and airy living space. The defining ambiance of these different functions is complemented by the choice of special mosaic floor coverings.
The house's entrance is marked by a welcoming space that merges with the entrance hall, forming a library design. Here, existing steps are widened, and tile flooring is chosen to add more fluidity to the space. Natural wood, tiled flooring, and mosaic coverings are combined with custom-designed furniture to add warmth and sophistication to the interior. Curved geometries, adapted to each element, provide a characteristic touch to the house's atmosphere.

The tile covering used for the kitchen, bathroom, and dressing room floors is played with by randomly cutting to create a modern mosaic pattern. The two-tone combination helps modernize the space and adds dynamism to the design.

The redesign of Cal Totxo celebrates the fusion of natural stone and mosaics, creating a modern living space that honors the union of nature and modernism.
