Hoi Kaloi Design Tabletop Lamp “Conduit”
“Conduit” is a marble tabletop lamp produced with contemporary manufacturing techniques.
Made by Athens-based design studio Hoi Kaloi, the design references archetypal Roman aqueduct remnants.
Solid marble, which is CNC-milled, is designed to fit a standardized 30 cm tubular bulb.
The lamp has an elaborately milled groove to accommodate the cable while exposing it, enhancing the directional sense between the power source and light.
Greek Inspirations from Different Regions
The choice of marble was decided based on locality and three distinct greek types were chosen:
- ‘Chios’ in dark brown
- ‘Ioannina’ in warm grey
- ‘Pentelic’ in bright white
Also, non-local travertine was added as reclaimed material.
"Conduit" is part of the "Gran Turismo" design collection.
Inspired by the archetypal Roman aqueduct surrounding the Southern European landscape, Hoi Kaloi's "Conduit" design was created by grinding solid marble.
Designed by Thanos Karampatsos, known for his work with Christina Kotsilelou for "Greece is for Lovers", the playful design creates a "channel of light" for the home.
An Elegant Balance
The idea came to Thanos Karampatsos in 2018 during a residency at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Shiga, Japan, and from there Studio Hoi Kaloi sprung into existence. For Karampatsos, Studio Hoi Kaloi is a passionate design endeavor that counterbalances an unforced elegance against a hint of subversion, while preserving intimacy and human connection.
