Exploring the Power of Marble with India Mahdavi

India Mahdavi leaves the use of color aside and prompts visitors to re-experience white marble with her works.

Athens-based Carwan Gallery has commissioned architect and designer India Mahdavi to create the Achromia collection, which focuses on exploring form in the absence of color. Mahdavi's biggest challenge was to focus on form, leaving the vibrant hues behind while her signature colorful design language.

Mahdavi's "Colorless" Colorful World
Architect and designer India Mahdavi is widely known for using color generously and innovatively in her work. The Iranian-born designer is also widely acclaimed for referencing different cultures, thanks to influences drawn from her nomadic childhood that guided her through the Middle East, New England, and Europe. 

Focus on Form
“Whiteness is one of the identifying marks of classicism. Although museums all over the world are filled with sculptures of pearly white marble, archaeology has revealed that statues and buildings were lavishly painted.”
Delving deeper into this newfound information, the Carwan Art Gallery has invited India Mahdavi to create a colorless series. Thus, she changed the way that works perceived and experienced. Mahdavi, who makes the entire collection from Pentelic white marble, says that the appearance of the objects changes as soon as their color is taken away.  Their new look highlights the power of color through its absence. In short, the collection presents the effect of color on our perception of space and psychology to the visitor.
