Castelgrande

Photographer Simone Bossi captures both the ancient and contemporary atmosphere of the restored "Castelgrande" of Bellinzona, Switzerland. The medieval stone castle, with many of its original elements dating back to the 13th century, witnessed an artistic revival by the Swiss architect Aurelio Galfetti in the 1980s. The transformation of the castle in the 20th century allows a clear reading of European history while providing a functional use of the buildings and the park for visitors and residents of the village of Bellinzone.

Bossi reveals the beauty of the castle originating from the impressive layers of different times, with elements spanning many centuries throughout antiquity.

Architect Aurelio Galfetti comments on the Castelgrande restoration: 'The project was only about buildings on top of the rock. I believed it was more important to give the restoration an urban dimension. Eventually, the project turned into a park to support the city, a public park made of rock in the city of Bellinzona, stone walls, an area with four trees. This design brings people together with the magnificent view of the Alps, with a route passing through the public space
