Ancient Roman Mosaic Floor Uncovered Under the Vineyard

After decades of research, a virtually pristine Roman mosaic floor has been uncovered in a vineyard in northern Italy. The discovery, found at the Comune di negrar di valpolicella, has already been declared an archaeological treasure under the vines. It is estimated to have formed part of the flooring and foundations of a Roman villa from the 3rd century AD.

The Roman villa with its mosaic floor was first noticed by scientists about a century ago in 1922. After decades of unsuccessful attempts to determine its exact location, parts of the ground and foundations of the ancient structure were discovered a few meters below a vineyard north of Verona.

Researchers carefully dig the Italian vineyard, hoping to reveal more of the Roman mosaic.
