A New Proposal for Carrying Huge Stones

Cambridge-based firm Matter Design has research on concrete forms that can be moved easily. The collaboration with the construction research company CEMEX Global R&D team has discovered a new way to transport huge stones that can only be transported by cranes or heavy equipment.

Brandon Clifford, the leader of the design team, gave information about their studies and findings in his speech at the TED2019 conference in Vancouver. The video documentation of the research offers suggestions on how to mount large stone forms on multi-level platforms, walls, and stairs. The work suggests masses that can easily roll, bend and slide with rounded lines and handles..

In research on the density and mass centers of massive masses, the center of mass calibrated precisely to check their stability using variable density concrete.

The teams began their research by examining how ancient civilizations built giant structures, suggesting that they developed their suggestions based on the example of Moai Statues, a piece of which reaches 82 tons on Easter Island. They propose an alternative way that makes building construction easier and less expensive and offering comfortable installation in difficult-to-reach areas with the proposal they have developed.
